About this Blog
I created this blog to share my experience and research knowledge related to disability issues.
According to the Census 2000, U.S. Census Bureau, 49.7 million people in our country have a disability. That’s nearly one out of five people. One in three Americans living with disabilities also lives below or at the poverty level. 9 million people with disabilities and their dependents collect Social Security benefits.
The disabled constitute America’s largest “minority” group, and they are likely the most politically under represented “minority” group.
Perhaps the word that best describes the historical treatment of persons with disabilities is separation. Although in some cultures the family takes responsibility for the care of disabled persons, for the most part this has the exception rather than the rule in the United States.
I checked into HUD’s Section 8 Homeownership Assistance in my area, but it isn’t offered. There is HUD’s Section 8 Rental Assistance, but there is a waiting list to qualify which takes 3 years. There doesn’t seem to be set aside slots for Social Security disabled persons in either HUD program.
I think there should be mandated percentage set aside slots for Social Security disabled persons with HUD’s Section 8 Rental Assistance and Homeownership Asistance programs.
The federal government has grossly underfunded rent and home ownership financial assistance for Social Security disabled individuals.
It appears that landlords and real estate rental/lease management companies require an income of three the rental amount. This requirement will make qualifying for leasing difficult for persons on Social Security Disability.
I am searching for private and or public financial assistance towards home ownership of a one bedroom condo which I have been renting for years.
I think it would be beneficial to have access to wealthy philanthropists to request one’s financial disability needs. Though it appears wealthy philanthropists are buffered from an individual’s financial assistance requests.
I am researching fiscal sponsorship to recruit an existing 501(c)(3) “fiscal agent” to receive grants and donations to support a project to distribute Homeownership Assistance to grantees deemed Social Security Disabled.
I joined The National Low Income Housing Coalition. I haven’t found the organization to be beneficial. I have provided a link to their website.
I hope to receive comments from blog browsers regarding their disability issues and sharing resources.
